Blind Man's Out of This World by Jonathan Royle – Video/Book Download
A legendary card-mindreading routine taken to a whole new level — with a freely shuffled deck, a volunteer's eyes closed, and astonishingly accurate results!
Paul Curry's classic Out of This World is one of the most celebrated card mentalism effects ever created. The routine is famously associated with Sir Winston Churchill, who was reportedly fooled by it.
With Blind Man's Out of This World, Jonathan Royle presents his own variations on this powerful plot, introducing psychological subtleties, hypnosis-themed presentation, and an extraordinary blindfolded finale.
The Ultimate Routine
The performance begins with a deck of playing cards that can be genuinely shuffled by multiple audience members. No pre-show work is required, and there are no deck switches during the routine.
A randomly selected volunteer is brought forward and apparently placed into a hypnotic trance. The instructions include methods using both real hypnosis and pseudo-hypnosis, allowing performers to choose an approach suited to their experience and performance style.
With their eyes closed throughout the process, the volunteer deals the face-down cards into two piles, apparently sensing which cards are red and which are black.
The result is astonishing: the cards are separated with remarkable accuracy, often with only one or two cards out of place!
Interestingly, Jonathan explains that allowing one or two cards to be incorrect can actually make the effect more convincing to an audience than achieving a perfect result. The apparent imperfections help reinforce the impression that something genuinely extraordinary has happened.
The Blindfolded Finale
For suitable performances, such as psychic-themed events, the routine can be taken even further.
The deck is shuffled again by audience members, and the volunteer closes their eyes once more. This time, the performer is genuinely blindfolded.
The shuffled deck is handed to the performer face down beneath the table, eliminating any possibility of seeing the order of the cards. The performer then brings the cards up one at a time, asking the volunteer to identify each as red or black.
Once again, the volunteer demonstrates an astonishing ability to separate the colors correctly — without a deck switch.
This creates a compelling double demonstration of apparent psychic ability, with both performer and volunteer seemingly operating under impossible conditions.
