Totems by Barbu Nitelea is a collection of visual close-up magic effects built around three core “totem” ideas that challenge perception and create unusual, dreamlike moments. The project is inspired by themes of perception and reality, presenting effects that appear to behave in impossible ways while remaining practical for performance. Each routine is constructed to be immediately visual and easy to understand from an audience perspective.
The first effect, ET Levitation, features a ring that appears to float in the air rather than falling naturally. This one-handed floating illusion is quick to set up and works well as an opener due to its visual clarity and immediate impact.
The second routine, Inception Bend, presents a visual bending effect with coins. In its expanded handling, two coins can be used simultaneously—one bending in the performer’s hand and the other in the spectator’s hand—creating a strong psychological effect with limited opportunity for explanation or reconstruction.
The third effect, Chainsaw Rubber Band, is a visual illusion where a stretched rubber band appears to remain suspended in an unnatural state rather than snapping back, producing a surreal visual moment.
All effects are designed to allow objects to be handed out for examination after performance. The methods use simple gimmicks that are accessible and easy to obtain, and in some cases, the routines can also be performed with borrowed objects that meet the necessary conditions.
